One of the most compelling reasons to give to Passports with Purpose to help Friends of LAFTI (Land for Tillers’ Freedom) build 25 homes in rural Tamil Nadu, India. Rather than an international NGO with high overhead costs and varying levels of local expertise, LAFTI was founded by Tamils in Tamil Nadu, where LAFTI focuses its efforts to help India’s untouchable caste (Dalits), especially women.

While visiting Tamil Nadu, I asked about the organization to get a reaction. The name, LAFTI was not known, but the Jagannathans who founded LAFTI 50 years ago “Yes, yes, we know all about the Jagannathans and their work. Good, good.” In a country plagued by corruption where residents aren’t afraid to criticize their corrupt leaders, I felt relieved and excited that the beneficiaries of PwP’s 2010 efforts were so highly regarded.
